Estonia Secures Continued Access to World-Class Supercomputing Through Next-Generation LUMI

The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking has signed a €387.8 million contract with Bull for the delivery of LUMI-AI, a next-generation supercomputer to be located in CSC’s data center in Kajaani, Finland, in the same way as the current LUMI supercomputer. Scheduled to become available to users in 2027, LUMI-AI is expected to provide ten times the artificial intelligence capacity and nearly twice the traditional high-performance computing capabilities of the LUMI today.

Estonia is one of the six countries in the LUMI AI Factory consortium, alongside Finland, Czechia, Denmark, Norway and Poland. Estonia already participates in the consortium operating the current LUMI supercomputer through the Estonian Scientific Computing Infrastructure (ETAIS), which provides Estonian researchers with access to LUMI’s computing resources. Participation in the new consortium will continue this cooperation, enabling Estonian scientists, researchers, as well as the public and private sectors, to continue to compute on the next-generation top-tier AI and high-performance computing infrastructure.

The LUMI-AI supercomputer will support next-generation AI workflows characterised by large-scale, dynamic, and often confidential datasets, while providing the computational capacity required for large-scale simulations and data-intensive scientific applications. LUMI-AI will serve as the computing backbone of the LUMI AI Factory, supporting both industrial academic research and AI innovation by European startups and small and medium-sized enterprises.

Like the current LUMI system, environmental sustainability will be central to LUMI-AI. The supercomputer will run entirely on renewable energy, and the excess heat it produces will be reused in Kajaani’s district heating network. LUMI-AI will also be integrated with the forthcoming LUMI-IQ quantum computer, creating a hybrid environment that brings together AI, high-performance computing and quantum technologies.
