About the role

We run Waldur, an open-source cloud orchestration platform, to manage the organisation’s cloud and HPC resources. We’re looking for a junior DevOps engineer to take ownership of operating our Waldur deployments — keeping them healthy, monitored, and up to date — and to pick up small development tasks in the codebase over time.

This isn’t a “senior on day one” role. We’re hiring someone early in their career who’s genuinely curious about infrastructure and backend systems, and we’ve scoped the job — and the ramp-up — accordingly. You’ll work closely with the engineering team, not alone on a pager.

What you’ll do

• Operate our Waldur deployments: deployments/upgrades, backups, restarts, and routine maintenance windows.
• Monitor system health — services, queues, database, background jobs — and respond to alerts, escalating anything beyond your scope.
• Maintain infrastructure as code — Kubernetes manifests/Helm charts and Ansible playbooks — under review from the team.
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines — testing, image builds, and automated deploys to the cluster.
• Triage and fix small bugs and papercuts in the Waldur codebase (Python/Django), under guidance from senior engineers.
• Write and improve runbooks so operational knowledge doesn’t live only in one person’s head.
• Support releases — coordinating deploys, verifying rollouts, rolling back when something’s wrong.

What we’re looking for

Must have

• Comfortable in a Linux shell — navigating, reading logs, basic troubleshooting.
• Some exposure to containers and Kubernetes, and version control (Git).
• Basic Python — able to read code and make small, guided changes.
• Methodical under pressure: when something breaks, you investigate rather than guess.
• Comfortable saying “I don’t know” and asking — we’d rather you ask than assume.

Nice to have

• Exposure to Helm, Ansible or ArgoCD.
• Some experience with CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI or similar).
• Familiarity with PostgreSQL or another relational database.
• Some Django or other web framework experience.
• Prior internship, coursework, or personal projects touching cloud infrastructure (OpenStack, AWS, Azure, GCP).
• Interest in open-source software and its workflows (issues, code review, CI).

The gross monthly salary for this position ranges from €2,200 to €2,500, depending on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
